Linear Transient Response Analysis

Overview

The purpose of a transient response analysis is to compute the behavior of a structure subjected to time-varying excitation.

The transient excitation is defined in the time domain.

All of the loads applied to the structure are known at each instant in time. 

Result Types

Results in Transient Response analysis are calculated at every time step or at time step increments.

The first output to review is a plot of response versus time.
The response can be:

  • displacement
  • acceleration
  • velocity 
  • other derived quantities such as stresses and strains.
One of the most valuable insights in a transient study is time history animation, which allows you to view a sequence of time step results.


Application Examples

Transient Response dynamic analysis is frequently used in the design of structures subjected to time varying and shock loads, such as:

  • automobile doors and bumpers
  • suspension systems
  • bridges
  • building frames, 
  • cellular phones
  • laptop computers
  • others
