Modal Analysis


The goal of modal analysis in structural mechanics is to determine the natural mode shapes and frequencies of an object or structure during free vibration. This is the most fundamental of all dynamic analysis types.

Modal analysis gives an idea of how the design will respond to different types of dynamic loads and allows to avoid resonant vibrations or to vibrate at a specified frequency.

This information is also very useful in calculating solution controls for other more advanced analyses.

Result Types

Modal Analysis calculates two very important dynamic factors:

  • Natural Frequency
  • Modal Shape
Natural Frequency is the frequency at which the structure naturally tends to vibrate, if it is subjected to a disturbance.

Modal Shape describes the deformed shape of the structure at a specific natural frequency.

These results characterize the basic dynamic behavior of the system and are an indication of how the structure will respond to dynamic loading.
